It was that time of the year again: leafbare. Frostpaw sat on an overhanging ledge right over the entire place; it was icy cold, the edge covered with snow. She'd backed up into a rather good-sized nook, crouched down very little. It wasn't a claimed den, and she didn't think she should clain such a large place all to herself, but the thought only came once before it went away.
Who had time to worry about things like that? Frostpaw was lonely, a rather secluded apprentice. She knew the place well enough now; she'd learned every inch before even thinking about making a friend or two.
The young, dark-furred apprentice crept toward the edge, settling down in a comfortable position. Frostpaw was having a dull day and now watched the Shadowclanners below her, waiting to catch at least some cat's eye.

Silvermask stared her multicolored eyes caught the eyes of an apprentice. She was up on a ledge in the camp. Silver moved quickly and doing a quick look at the rock she guessed the best way up and she crouched her muscles rippled and she jump from rock to rock tell she hit the top to where the apprentice was. She looked around taking quicks snaps with her photo memorie."Hello Frostpaw" she said. Letting a yawn out she stretched and stared sharply at the apprentices.

With a low dip of her muzzle, Frostpaw back from the edge, her tail low. "Hello Silvermask," she said, lifting her eyes and giving the medicine cat a smile. She was very nearly surprised: in her mind, it wasn't very likely a warrior would hop up to meet her, much less the medicine cat. She lowered to sit, shifting her paws before speaking again.
"How are you today, Silvermask?" She was sure to remember what her mother had told her: don't speak with a lilt, speak clearly, ectcetera. Don't merge your words, young lady, her mother would've said. Frostpaw felt a shiver go through her: for no reason, really, just a sudden chill. Perhaps because her paws were cold; her paws were the only things on her body to keep warm, and the icy snow was fairly bitter on them.

"Fine" replied Silvermask. Her eyes watched the apprentice shiver and sighed."Come now inside the cave". She herded the apprentice inside to keep the chill away. There was no need for cats to bring sickness upon themselves. Silver looked Frostpaw over make sure she was okay it was more out of habit than by anything else. "You should stay inside as much as possible" she chided her eyes locked with the apprentices as she spoke. Then she glanced away outside to the wind that whipped snow into the air.Starclan I will need you with me now more than ever it is leafbare when most fall sick anwser my plea.

Frostpaw shrugged, ushered into the cave by the regal she-cat. "Yeah, I know. With the cold and all, the illnesses." she was brushing it off with a grin, as she never took those sorts of warnings seriously. She pretended, mainly to please Silvermask. Frostpaw never saw a need for such keep-warm-stay-safe attitudes, at least for her, even though they'd most likely saved her hide on more than one occasion.
"I can't help but wander around outside this time of year," she purred. "I think the snow is very beautiful. And I never stay out too long," she added, shrugging helplessly.[/color]

Silvermask noticed the fact that the she-cat had only brushed aside her warning. She was relived the apprentice explained why and that she did not try to simply please her. "Am sure you are aware of the cold we all are" she admired the cat's tolerance for the snow, the fact that she actually enjoyed it."Just remember your mind must listen to your body and vise versa". With that she let a yawn escape messing up the affect.

"Yes, Silvermask." she nodded, "of course. It'd be pretty stupid not to!" The young she-cat shifted, her stomach quietly growling. A mere whisper, but it made Frostpaw ncomfortable enough to rise to her paws and knead the ground. "Silvermask," she began, keeping her nose pointed toward the ground, "could you take me hunting? I don't have a mentor yet, and I feel bad for just...y'know...taking stuff out of the fresh kill pile."
Frostpaw silently hoped the older, wiser she-cat would say yes; every time Frostpaw had attempted to leave camp she was stopped, either by a worried queen or by a wary warrior. But if Silvermask is leading me out, she thought with a grin, no one would try and stop me; especially her being medicine cat!

Amusement glittered in her eyes as Frostpaw responded but her eyes hardend once again as the apprentices stomach growled. Listening intently she weighed her options. Her eyes was turned side ways eye clouded with puzzlement. "You may come with me if you wish but we must find catnip as well". That seemed reasonable enough, she could take the she-cat out and Frostpaw could help her find what she needed. "Catnip is arrow shaped small plant with uneven edges hopefull we will be able to find some in the cold". Turning around she bound down the ledge tell her feet met the bottom. The she looked back up to make sure Frostpaw was following.

"Sure, that'd be fine," Frostpaw purred. Anything, she thought, I'd do almost anything to get out of camp for a few minutes or longer. Almost anything. She thought of this and giggled quietly, quickly rubbing her paw over her nose before bounding off behind Silvermask.
A thought struck her as she followed, close to the medicine cat's tail. "Silvermask, d'you think we'll have to dig for the catnip?" Her tone was not 'ugh, digging for catnip, how lame,' but a curious, honestly puzzled one. She'd honestly never seen catnip on the original plant before; she was completely clueless. In fact, she wasn't even sure what kind of plant it even was. A bush? A tree? A creeping bundle of vines? She remembered the large, orange, lumpy pumpkin she had found outside a twoleg nest. A kittypet who'd lived in the nest told her what it was, that twolegs would decorate it with odd cuts and scratches, like massive, curly wounds.
The thin apprentice realized she had stopped in her tracks to think, nearly left behind. She righted herself and leaped to catch up with Silvermask.

Silvermask was lost in her own thoughts she felt cold and uncertain. It had been a while since she had heard from the Starclan. What could keep them away for so long. She was snapped from her thoughts when the apprentice asked a question she was about to anwser when she noticed that Frostpaw was spacing out. She waited calmly for Frostpaw to finish her thoughts then said "We may, the snow is still new so they may still be alive". She led the way again and began to look in the snow. Silver nosed snow away looking for the mint. She payed little attention to Frostpaw.

Frostpaw nodded, shaking her fur and following Silvermask once more. As the older cat began to look through the snow, the apprentice turned her attention to sneaking just a few feet away, far enough to hear only her breathing, nothing else.
The black cat began to paw lightly at the powder at the base of trees, just to start. Green grasses, dead leaves, dead grasses. Nothing like catnip she could see. She was about to say she couldn't find anything in her spot until she happened upon leaves that fit her description. Mostly green, brown tips. Uneven edges, she thought. "Silvermask, this it?" It was a odd plant, with curling tendrils. The leaves looked almost like tiny oak leaves, and at the sniff of them she sneezed. It didn't smell like catnip. But maybe, on the bush, she told herself.

Silver lifted her snow covered head to the sound of the apprentice. She chided herself for letting the apprentice get to far away but as soon as she glimpsed the leaves she flashed forward knocking the she-cat over because what ever she had found certainty wasn't catnip. "Think before you go digging around in things" she hissed her eyes now inspecting the leaves. It was a strange plant unfamiliar to her it was a vine so she quickly went through her mind scraping to find what it was. While doing this she asked "Did you touch it?".
-What is it cause you got me. Am thinking grape vine.

[Poison oak. C:]
"Woah, what--" Frostpaw tumbled backward, rolling down a few inches of hill before getting caught in a tangle of tree roots. She stood, stretching out and pulling herself up from the deep snow, shaking white power off her muzzle and back. She crept back to Silvermask, lowering her head. "Sorry, Silvermask." she said, ears lowering slightly.
Frostpaw leaned forward to inspect the vines just to the side of the medicine cat. "No...I don't think so." she shook her head, sniffing at them again before backing away. "What is it?"

Upon further inspection she realized it was similar to a plant she did know. It had leaves of three here and there though a few of them had five. She sighed and said "look see how on one stem there is three leaves ". She waited for the apprentice to see it before continuing."Its close to the plant called poison ivy though this one looks like oak, this has a small chance of harming you if it touches you, I wouldn't recommend eating it but a believe it doesn't hurt you aether" she said a little uncertainty. "aether way its not what where looking for ".

The black-furred apprentice nodded, catching the subtle uncertain tone to Silvermask's voice. "I won't touch it at all anyway," she said, grinning. Frostpaw leaped to the left, to the right, and then began digging again. More of the ivy stuff. Lovely. She moved far enough, again, where she could hardly see Silvermask any more, almost hidden behind a snowdrift. Dig, dig, dig. Oh, tree roots. Old grass. No mint.
Frostpaw's nose twitched, catching a scent. Rodent. Probably a small mouse. She dropped immediatly to a crouch, spotting the small rodent amongst a few fallen tree branches. She leaped for it, missing by half an inch and falling on her chest. With a growl, Frostpaw began to chase after it, flying over roots and bushes. A final leap and she'd caught the mouse, digging her fangs into it's tiny throat.
The young she-cat, full now, looked up and around. For a second or two, she feared she was lost, though the fear subsided when she caught sight of her footprints in the snow, beginning to follow them back toward Silvermask. She hadn't realized how far she'd gone.
